Has your family written all their “Thank-You” cards from Christmas yet? Don’t worry, we won’t tell if they haven’t! If getting your kids to write cards to their relatives who bought them presents over the holidays is a tough sell, here’s a way to get them in the habit of being grateful for the whole year: Start a family gratitude journal as a group project with the whole family for 2021!
Ironically, gratitude has some amazing benefits that don’t just help the person being thanked for their kind deed. You experience benefits, yourself, just for being thankful. There are both physical and mental health benefits that come from practicing gratitude on a regular basis. It can lower your blood pressure, reduce stress, and even help you sleep! Gratitude journals are an easy way to practice being grateful every day and improve the lives of those around you, as well as your own. Start this gratitude journal with your family to experience the benefits together!
You can use a physical journal to write your daily entries, or even use a digital format like a document on Google Drive. Regardless of its format, it will be a meaningful way to record and practice gratitude every time you open it to record.
Here are some suggestions for what to write about: Ask each member of the family to share the following points each week and record it in the journal together.
- Name 3 things you are grateful for right now.
- What is something nice that someone did for you?
- Did you do something nice for someone this week?
- What do you plan on doing this week to improve the lives of your family and friends?
- What is your favorite memory from the last 7 days?
We hope you’ll enjoy creating a gratitude journal together with your family! At the end of the year, make sure to take a moment to look through your gratitude journal together. You can reflect on all the things you were grateful for in the last 12 months, and what you’re looking forward to in the future.
