10 Things You Can Do for Your Mental Health


Making sure you’re healthy mentally is an issue that more people are struggling with.  Sometimes it doesn’t feel like there are enough hours in the day to focus on your mental health, and that can have a negative impact, not only mentally, but physically as well.  If you’re struggling with how to take care of yourself mentally, then the following list is for you.

  1. Value yourself – Avoid criticizing yourself; treat yourself with kindness and respect, and talk positively to yourself. Make time for yourself and the activities that you enjoy, and don’t feel bad about doing things you like to do.
  2. Take care of your body – Eating right, drinking lots of water, exercising, getting enough sleep, and avoiding unhealthy habits are all physical things that can have a positive impact on your mental state. Try exercising outside when the weather is good; sunlight can be a mood elevator.
  3. Surround yourself with good people – Make sure you don’t isolate yourself from the supportive people in your life. Make plans with family members, good friends, or even join a club, class or group to meet new people.  Go on a vacation with people you enjoy spending time with.
  4. Volunteer – Doing something for others is a way to make yourself feel good mentally. You could volunteer at a shelter, help people or animals in need, or even just see if friends or family members need help with anything.
  5. Learn how to properly deal with stress – Stress is a big factor in your mental health, so do things to lower your stress level. Try yoga, exercising, playing with a pet (yours or someone else’s), or write about what’s stressing you out in a journal.  Laughter is also a great way to reduce the stress in your life; hang out with a funny friend, watch funny videos, or go to a comedy club.
  6. Quiet your mind – Try meditating, mindfulness, and/or prayer. Turn off your electronics for a while so you don’t have social media, calls, texts, and emails interrupting you.  All of these things can help you feel calm for longer periods of time, and can improve your outlook on life.
  7. Set realistic goals – Aiming high isn’t bad, but make sure your goals, whether they’re academic, professional, or personal, are achievable. Start small with something you’re already good at, and make it your goal to become even better at it, then move on to tougher tasks.  Write down the steps you need to take to achieve them, and celebrate your progress as you go.
  8. Break up any monotony – Routines can help with efficiency, but try a little change of pace every now and then so you don’t feel stuck in a rut. Take a trip, alternate your exercise routine, change your furniture around, or try a new restaurant.  Having something new to look forward to can help boost your overall happiness.
  9. Avoid alcohol and drugs – Self-medicating is not helpful for your mental wellness; it can aggravate any problems you’re having. A little alcohol use won’t harm you, but keep an eye on how much and how often you drink.
  10. Get help if you need it – If you find yourself struggling with your mental health, don’t be afraid to seek help. Seeking help for any mental wellness issues is not a sign of weakness, and can help you lead a fuller life.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to your mental health is to start taking care of yourself now.  Your mental health affects how you think and feel, which affects how you interact with the world around you.  Make yourself and your mental health a priority, and help yourself get to a point where you can enjoy life to the fullest.
