10 Tips to Improve Happiness

I don’t know about you, but this time of year sometimes finds me in a slump. Winter seems to be dragging on, and I’ve usually failed at most of my New Year’s Resolutions by now.

Happiness can seem so far away, but it’s not as far as you might think. Here are 10 tips that will help us increase our happiness.

  1. Be Thankful – I think part of the reason we feel unhappy sometimes is because we focus on the negative instead of the positive in our lives. We all have things that we can be thankful for and keeping a daily journal of gratitude will help shift our focus and increase our happiness.
  2. Be Generous – Whether it’s with your time or money or talents, helping others will take the focus off your own problems for a moment and it feels good to know you’ve made a difference in someone else’s life.
  3. Be Mindful – Practicing mindfulness or meditation even for just 15 minutes a day is a great way to improve your happiness by giving you a brief escape from the stress of everyday life.
  4. Be Active – I’ll be the first to admit I’m not one of those people who love to exercise, but I do love the feeling of satisfaction I have after I have exercised. Besides all the physical benefits and increasing your endorphins which does increase your happiness, it feels good knowing you’ve made a choice that will positively impact your future well-being.
  5. Be Well Rested – Even though we often treat it as a luxury, everyone knows getting the proper amount of sleep each night is an essential part of our overall well-being and consequently our happiness.
  6. Be a Good Friend – Most of the time it’s not the things in our lives that make us happy, but the people. Be the kind of friend you wish you had and you’ll find that people will return the favor.
  7. Be Realistic – Nothing kills happiness faster than when reality doesn’t match our expectations. I’m not saying don’t have big dreams or goals! Dream big, but divide your goals into manageable and measurable steps, so you can celebrate small wins along the way.
  8. Be a Learner – Don’t view your setbacks as the end of the world, instead try to see them as opportunities to learn and grow.
  9. Be Present – Social Media provides us with endless opportunities to convince people—including ourselves that we’re happy. But when we don’t get as many likes as we hoped, that sunset doesn’t seem quite as nice anymore. Take time to enjoy more sunsets without trying to get the perfect picture for Instagram.
  10. Be You – Comparison is the thief of joy. Spend less time worrying about all the ways you think don’t measure up, and more energy focusing on all the unique gifts you have to offer the world.

Bonus – Smile. It’s simple and contagious. It’ll make you happier and spread happiness to those around you!
