World Suicide Prevention Day

September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day – WSPD – for 2017.  The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention – CASP – website states that “It is estimated that each day in Canada, 11 people end their life, and 210 make a suicide attempt.”  They also point out that suicide happens regardless of age, ethnicity, and economic and social boundaries.  CASP is challenging all Canadian communities to find a way to “Take a Minute” and connect to WSPD on the 10th in order to shine a light on the issue of suicide, and to send a message to all those that have been affected by suicide, or those that are struggling with such thoughts.

Some ways that you can participate in WSPD are:

  • Wear a suicide awareness ribbon to show your support for suicide awareness and prevention.
  • Speak up about WSPD; spread the word on social media as much as you can.
  • Light a candle at 8:00pm on the 10th either as a symbol of caring and compassion or in recognition of those impacted or bereaved by suicide.
  • Reach out to someone who may be struggling and see if they’re willing to talk. Small acts of kindness can be life changing.
