Two different Nutrien facilities are located in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, a town known as the heart of agriculture in the region. Because of its central location, the city has been used as a hub of commerce and farming since its founding, and Nutrien has found it to be helpful, as well! In addition to a retail facility that serves the local community, a division office is also located in Tisdale to act as a liaison between retail operations in the Northeast region of the province and the head office.
When settlers first started building in the area in 1902, it was dubbed, “Doghide,” after the Doghide River running through the area. When the Canadian Northern Railway was built to reach the area in 1904, the townspeople honored the railway civil engineer who made it possible, Frederick W. Tisdale, by renaming the town after him. Tisdale quickly grew through an influx of immigrants through the “Roarin’ Twenties and the Great Depression. It continues to grow to this day as families escape the rat race of larger cities and embrace a small town life that is full of modern amenities.
The Nutrien facilities that are located in Tisdale are both part of the town’s past, as well as its future. The retail facility, which is currently staffed by 8 full-time employees, was originally established in 1979 as an independent fertilizer company. Since its independent start, it has become part of the Nutrien global team. In 2020, the facility built a new office to better serve their customers, though the staff is already known for serving their community in their free time. Chris Szucs, Ag Retail Manager III at the Tisdale retail facility, coaches 2 minor hockey teams and helps raise money for the league through Ice breaker sales. Others at the site are firearms safety instructors, 4-H leaders, and one even runs the Ramblin Rodeo!
“All of us at one time have worked within the community,” Chris said, “giving back to the community what it has given to us.” Their focus on their customers is equal to the energy they put into helping their neighbors and friends, as they are recognized as one of the top Proven Seed sites for sales in Canada.
The Division office, which is the retail facility’s liaison to the head office, also provides excellent customer service. Working closely with regional facilities, they help develop detailed customer crop plans to provide the most optimized products and services to help them grow to their best potential. With a full time staff of 4, the division office was opened in 2014 to support the many Nutrien facilities in the area. The dedicated staff not only provides assistance with crop plans, but also offers help with HR, safety, logistics support, and financial guidance.
To boost morale and team spirit, the close-knit team of the division office recently started virtual coffee breaks for the staff. To keep from overworking, only “water-cooler talk” is allowed. With as much as they get done in a day, it sounds like it’s a well-deserved break!
We hope that if you’re ever in the Saskatchewan province of Canada, that you’ll give the Nutrien Family members in Tisdale a visit! You’ll enjoy beautiful scenery, a bustling agriculture hub, and you can even see “The World’s Largest Honeybee” built to honor the town’s farming heritage. We are very proud of the people who staff the Nutrien facilities there, and would love to join in on those virtual coffee breaks, ourselves!
