Weeping Water is located south of Omaha, Nebraska and just a short drive from the Missouri River, which makes up the border between Nebraska and Iowa. It was the original territory of the indigenous Omaha and Otoe tribes, who named the creek running through the area, “Nigahoe,” which means “rustling water.”
Through mistranslations by French and English explorers, eventually the area became known as Weeping Water. An epic poem by the English author Orsamus Charles Dake imagines a battle of the indigenous tribes that inspired the name, but it is just speculation. Nevertheless, it became an important part of the folklore of white settlers throughout Nebraska.
Stories like this are preserved by the Weeping Water Valley Historical Society, which maintains a map of historic landmarks and also businesses that have come and gone in the city. Their mission preserves the memory of the town’s creation, and also builds a foundation for future growth.
