How Sleep Affects People Physically


Getting an adequate amount of sleep every day is crucial to keeping your mind and body healthy. Research shows that there is more to sleep deprivation than just being tired. In fact, lack of sleep can even lead to chronic diseases and death. Let’s get into some things to be aware of.

  • Accidents
    • This one is huge. Think about how tired you’ve felt while driving or while at work. Have you thought of the people around you who might be sleep deprived? It only takes a second to make a mistake that could lead to an accident.
  • Mental
    • Getting less than the recommended daily requirement of sleep doesn’t just make you more vulnerable to accidents, it changes your cognitive functions. It has been shown that people who don’t get enough sleep don’t perform tasks as well, are irritable or overly emotional, it affects your ability to focus, and affects your memory.
  • Physical
    • When you sleep your body is hard at work making sure your body is at its best. This goes for your immune system, but can affect much more. Some things that could come from continued lack of sleep are heart failure, heart attacks, irregular heartbeat, constant colds and flus, obesity, diabetes, depression, high blood pressure, and stroke.

The recommended amount of sleep for adults is between 7 and 9 hours a night. While not getting the full amount of sleep one night won’t necessarily cause all of the above to happen, getting less than 5 hours of sleep for a week or longer can have some serious consequences. Best things you can do to get your best sleep is to make your bedroom a non-entertainment zone. It’s hard, but looking at screens (TV, cellphones, tablets, computers, etc.) has been proven to disrupt with your sleep patterns. Tips to help you get a better night’s sleep: make your bedroom dark, avoid caffeine intake 4 hours before bed, and keep a consistent sleep schedule.
