This month we’re getting to know Gilbert Plains, Manitoba! This town has a Nutrien retail fertilizer facility that supports local farmers and agriculture. Situated between two national parks, the farmland of Gilbert Plains gives easy access to beautiful vistas. Not only are locals just a short drive away from either the Duck Mountain Provincial State Park, to the North, and Riding Mountain National Park to the South, residents of Gilbert Plains can enjoy summer fun at Dauphin Lake in just a short 30 minutes drive.
Out of all the views one can see in Gilbert, there’s one you may not expect. Gilbert Plains is also home to a giant golf ball! Gilbert the Golf Ball welcomes all to the Gilbert Plains Country Club. Complete with every amenity a golf lover needs, the country club restaurant is a favorite gathering spot for locals. You could even bring a camper or tent to a site in the campgrounds just across the street, and turn your day of golf into a whole weekend in the great outdoors.
Gilbert the Golf Ball isn’t the only must-see landmark in Gilbert Plains, either. A visit to the free history museum is a great way to spend a visit learning about the area and the town’s origins. It is over 100 years old as a township, and used prior to that by indigenous tribes as a fertile hunting ground. When the town was founded by Glenlyon Campbell in 1906, he named it after Gilbert Ross, a Métis man who lived in the area. In addition to the efforts of the museum, the residents also work together to archive the history of the town in online groups where they post photos and intriguing artifacts. The result is a rich collection of historical information about living in the agricultural heart of Manitoba, Canada.
The residents of Gilbert Plains also support the future of their town, the youth. A local nonprofit called the Gilbert Plains Community Fund supports scholarships for recent high school graduates to attend career training or pursue their post-secondary studies. A local bank in Gilbert Plains, Fusion Credit Union, also recently honored 2021 graduates with posters congratulating them in their windows. What a great way to boost morale for students ready to achieve great things!
Nutrien is proud to be an active part of a community as supportive of each other as Gilbert Plains. We are grateful to the team members in the facilities there that represent the Nutrien family and give back to the community!
