The holidays are a busy time for most people, but there’s a date you shouldn’t miss: International Volunteer Day on December 5th. Volunteering exemplifies the generosity of the holiday spirit and puts you in a giving mindset without spending a single dollar! Started in 1985, International Volunteer Day is still a perfect time to log some hours helping out in your community. This year’s IVD theme is “Together We Can,” and if you choose to volunteer on December 5, use the hashtags #togetherwecan and #IVD2020 to connect with others who are participating.
A volunteer opportunity for every interest
The needs of our society are many, and almost every one of them is met by a nonprofit organization of some kind. This means that no matter what your interests are, there is a way to make volunteering exciting! Some people who enjoy community service may even align their volunteer work with what they do for a living, and some use it as a chance to escape their day-to-day duties. It’s entirely up to you what you choose to do to help those in need.
All ages welcome
Most volunteer opportunities are friendly for all ages, which means the whole family can come along. Parents can take on tasks that require special equipment or skills, while the kids can learn by watching and helping with age-appropriate tasks of their own. Contact the organization you’ll be serving with in advance of a volunteer opportunity if you have any questions.
This year, it may not be safe to participate in volunteer activities that require you to interact with large groups of people, but there are still lots of ways to volunteer virtually! Volunteermatch.com, the world’s largest database of volunteer opportunities, has an entire page dedicated to listing volunteer organizations that have ways you can make a difference remotely. You could make companionship phone calls to people in isolation, or make crafts to brighten the day of someone far away. Just like any in-person volunteering, there’s something out there for any interest!
