International Day of Friendship – 10 acts of kindness to celebrate your friends

July 30 is the day we celebrate the International Day of Friendship, but you don’t have to wait until the end of the month to celebrate your friends! Try some of these random acts of kindness to show your friends how much you care about them! You can even make a new friend or two by sharing these with a stranger.

  1.  Send a letter – or 5! With “snail mail” getting less and less common, it makes receiving a letter even more special. Can’t think of what to write? A simple “Thinking of you,” message will do the trick!
  2. Tell them a favorite memory you have with them. Sometimes people can forget the impact they make in others’ lives. Remind them how they’ve impacted yours by sharing a memory of why you love being their friend.
  3. Host a love parade in their honor. Gather up your friends and family and hold a special parade for your friend – all from the safety of your own cars. Participants can make signs to tell your friend how special they are.
  4. Bake them cookies!  Everyone loves cookies and it doesn’t count against any diets if it’s from a friend!
  5. Print and frame a favorite photo of the two of you together as a gift. There are even services online where you can upload the photo and have it delivered right to them!
  6. Paint/draw a picture of them. If you have kids who love to draw, you know how special you can feel when they draw a picture of you! Try it with a friend your own age! No matter the skill level, it will make them smile.
  7. Leave an encouraging note on their car in the morning. You can make it anonymous or sign your name, but it’s sure to brighten their mood.
  8. Make them a home-cooked meal. Use your sleuthing skills to find out what your friend’s favorite food is. Then, create a home-cooked meal for them! If you are both socially distancing for health concerns, you can make something that can be reheated in the oven later.
  9. Buy them a candle. The scent is a powerful sense in the memory-making functions of the brain. When they use a candle that was given as a gift, that scent will always remind them of your friendship!
  10. Make a video for them. Whether it’s a quick TikTok or a highly-edited memory slideshow, a video sharing why you love your friend will be a great digital keepsake they can remember on days they need a pick-me-up. Don’t know how to edit videos? There are lots of apps out there nowadays that make it easy!
