The dubbing of May as Mental Health Month happened 70 years ago in 1949. Mental Health America along with affiliate organizations led the observance then and continues to do so now by encouraging communities to take part in hosting activities, events, and screenings locally, and the website for Mental Health America provides a Toolkit of resources to help individuals get started with and organize local efforts of their own. In the past, there has been a theme to Mental Health Month, and the 2019 recognition is no different. The driving force to this year’s campaign is actually the same as last year but with some additions. The #4Mind4Body theme is carrying over and ramping up to include animal companionship (pets and support animals), spirituality, humor, work-life balance, and recreation and social connections. All of these additions will be correlated to their boost on overall mental health and wellness in general.
It isn’t only the United States involved in spreading the news of mental health and its importance, either. Canada is on its 67th year of celebrating Canadian Mental Health Association’s Mental Health Week, which will be observed May 6 – May 12, 2019. In addition to events and activities like the U.S., the CMHA website offers some interactive pieces to check on your own mental health and reevaluate your current state.
Their checklist, for instance, provides good prompts for self-evaluation and can be found here. It’s a nonintrusive way to take some time to check in on yourself and balance. Statistics show that one in every five adults will suffer from mental illness at some point in his or her lifetime. It is important to take part in activities that are geared at educating the public on what mental health is and how to maintain good mental health. The observances in May are two widely publicized campaigns to help reach that goal of awareness.
