The Earth is our home, regardless of what country we live in or what our individual houses are like. This July 28th, we celebrate the 2020 World Nature Conservation Day to focus our efforts on preserving our natural environment and keeping our home, Earth, healthy. The future of our society depends on a healthy climate – everything from food production to our favorite vacation spots are affected by the environment. So what can we do today to protect the future?
Support your local environmental efforts
Just as supporting local businesses helps your community thrive, finding a local environmental cause to support can make a big impact for yourself and neighbors. Sometimes it’s overwhelming to think of the large scale of climate concerns around the world, but you can make a difference one person at a time in your own town! Organizations like Keep America Beautiful that educate about recycling and litter cleanups often have local affiliates, and similar organizations are located around the world. Close by parks and wildlife areas often hold fundraisers and seek volunteers, too. You can get involved today!
Remember to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
World Nature Conservation Day is a great time to check in on your own habits to see how Earth-friendly you are on a day-to-day basis. Are you following the three “R’s?” These are Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The first, reduce, means that you should reduce the amount of resources you use – whether its energy, water, consumer goods like clothing, plastics, and even clothing. The second, reuse, calls for you to use materials you already have like clothing and toys, minimizing the need to purchase new items. The last, recycle, can mean using recycling services provided by the city, or finding new inventive ways to take old, worn out materials and create something new with them! Lots of craft sites have ideas on what is called “upcycling,” too, where you can create art and decor with old materials.
Share your love of the Earth with others!
Just like sharing a love of nature with your kids can make a huge impact on the rest of their lives, sharing your passion for protecting our environment with others can create a big change! Does your city need to improve its recycling or litter management? Don’t be afraid to speak to local officials. Write letters to lawmakers about the importance of protecting our natural spaces. Keep up to date with policy changes in your country to make sure our environment is being considered during every decision. The state of our climate affects everyone’s future!
